EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT / LEARNING DISORDERS

Specific Learning Disorders

Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) are neurodevelopmental conditions that affect how individuals acquire and use academic skills such as reading, writing, or mathematics. SLDs are not related to intelligence or motivation—many individuals with learning disorders are highly capable and hardworking. Their brains simply process information differently.

SLDs are lifelong and may include:

  • Impairment in Reading, 'Dyslexia' – challenges with reading accuracy, fluency, or comprehension
  • Impairment in Writing, 'Dysgraphia' – difficulties with handwriting, spelling, or written expression
  • Impairment in Mathematics, 'Dyscalculia' – struggles with number concepts, math reasoning, or calculation

These differences can impact confidence, classroom performance, and mental wellbeing if not properly understood or supported. The good news is that with the right identification and strategies, students with SLDs can thrive academically and emotionally.

You may want to consider an assessment if your child:

  • Struggles with reading, writing, or maths despite regular instruction
  • Avoids schoolwork or becomes easily frustrated with learning tasks
  • Works hard but still falls behind peers academically
  • Has difficulty remembering instructions, spelling, or basic number facts
  • Is bright and articulate, yet underperforms in school
  • Has experienced a dip in self-esteem or school engagement

Early identification can help prevent unnecessary distress and unlock more effective support both at school and home.
