Children may benefit from seeing a psychologist for a wide range of challenges that can affect their emotions, behaviour, and development. Common reasons for referral include anxiety, low mood, difficulties with attention or concentration, emotional outbursts, sleep problems, friendship issues, and changes in family life such as separation or loss. Psychologists also support children who are having trouble adjusting to school, managing worries, or understanding big feelings. Working in a child-friendly and supportive way, psychologists help children feel safe to express themselves and build the skills they need to cope, grow, and thrive.
For children under the age of 14, the first appointment is attended by parents or caregivers only. This session allows the psychologist to gather important background information, including developmental history, family dynamics, and current concerns. It also provides an opportunity to discuss goals for therapy and ask any questions. This parent-only session helps ensure a thorough understanding of the child’s needs before beginning direct work with them.
